Professor Ford received his doctorate from Harvard in 1969, then taught at Stanford and the University of California, Los Angeles before coming to Harvard in 1991, where he chaired the department from 1991 to 2005. Professor Ford is an honorary Professor of Welsh at Bangor University in North Wales and an honorary Research Fellow in the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies in the University of Wales.
